Types of Grafting Procedures

Our practice offers several grafting options, tailored to each patient’s needs:

Socket Preservation

Performed immediately after tooth extraction, this procedure preserves the bone in the extraction site, preventing shrinkage and preparing the area for future implant placement.

Ridge Augmentation

Rebuilds the natural contours of the jaw in areas where bone loss has occurred, creating a strong foundation for implants or other restorations.

Sinus Lift / Sinus Augmentation

Used in the upper back jaw when bone height is limited. The sinus membrane is gently lifted, and bone material is added to allow secure implant placement.

Block Bone Grafts

Used for patients with significant bone loss, a solid piece of bone—either from the patient or donor material—is placed to restore structure and provide reliable support for implants.

Soft Tissue Grafting

Focuses on restoring gum tissue around teeth or implants. Soft tissue grafts improve aesthetics, reduce sensitivity, and strengthen the gums to support long-term oral health.

Benefits of Grafting

Grafting procedures offer multiple advantages for both health and aesthetics:

  • Bone loss and reduced jaw strength
  • Gum recession and root exposure
  • Difficulty placing dental implants
  • Shifting or loose teeth
  • Changes to facial appearance, such as a sunken look

Grafting addresses these issues by rebuilding a healthy foundation, allowing implants or restorations to succeed long-term.

What Is Grafting?

Grafting is a surgical procedure that rebuilds areas of the mouth where bone or soft tissue has deteriorated. It strengthens the jaw, supports teeth and implants, and restores the natural contours of your smile. There are two primary types of grafting:

  • Bone Grafting: Replaces lost bone in the jaw to provide support for dental implants and preserve facial structure.
  • Soft Tissue Grafting: Restores or reshapes gums to protect tooth roots, improve aesthetics, and support implant health.

Grafting can be performed before or during implant placement depending on your needs.

Why Grafting Is Necessary

Jawbone and gum tissue require stimulation from teeth to maintain their volume and density. When teeth are lost, the surrounding bone can shrink, and gums can recede, leading to:

  • Bone loss and reduced jaw strength
  • Gum recession and root exposure
  • Difficulty placing dental implants
  • Shifting or loose teeth
  • Changes to facial appearance, such as a sunken look

Grafting addresses these issues by rebuilding a healthy foundation, allowing implants or restorations to succeed long-term.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your grafting procedure begins with a consultation, including a clinical exam and imaging to assess your bone and gum tissue. Most grafting procedures are performed with local anesthesia or sedation to ensure comfort.

During the procedure:

  • The area is prepared and cleaned
  • Grafting material is placed in the bone or soft tissue
  • The site is protected and sutured to encourage proper healing

After the procedure:

  • Healing typically takes several weeks to months
  • Temporary restorations may be worn during the healing period
  • Implants or final restorations are placed once the graft is fully integrated

We provide detailed post-operative instructions and support to ensure smooth recovery.

Evaluating candidacy for bone or soft tissue grafting before dental implants

Am I a Candidate for Grafting?

You may be a candidate if you:

  • Have missing teeth and plan to receive dental implants
  • Have experienced gum recession or thinning tissue
  • Have been told there is insufficient bone for implant placement
  • Want to restore jaw strength and facial structure
  • Desire a more natural and healthy-looking smile

A personalized consultation with imaging allows our oral surgeons to determine the most effective approach for your needs.
